News video on Irish broadcasters' websites

None of the websites of Irish broadcasters offer much in the way of web-specific video that accompanies articles. The focus is very much on offering a catch-up service and linking these to the articles. Here's a look at the journalistic video on offer from Irish broadcasters on their websites.

A huge back-catalogue of news bulletins, dating back to 1998 (an early example is here). Many of the earlier files are of poor quality however. In recent years, more and more news programmes have become available, including current affairs programmes such as Prime Time, and niche news bulletins like RTÉ News on Two, and breaking news programmes. RTÉ News Now (the top-right screengrab in the picture) launched in 2008. Since 2009, programmes are available in higher-quality Flash format via the RTÉ Player, but for a limited time only. Bulletins can be watched live.

TV3 introduced video to its site for the first time in 2008. Since then it has made its latest bulletin available on the news page (its first television bulletin is at 7:00am on weekdays). Bulletins cannot be watched in their entirity within the one video, but can be pieced together as individual reports from its bulletins are available for playback. Its current affairs programmes, like Midweek and Tonight with Vincent Browne, have their own archives also. Recently, TV3 introduced a live player.

Much of TG4's programmes are streamed live on its dedicated video website. Nuacht TG4 and 7 Lá are available on-demand in its cursaí reatha section. The archive goes back to late March 2010.

Very little video is available from Setanta Ireland online, but given its status as a subscription channel this makes sense. Eircom Broadband customers can, however, access live streams of much of its important live programming online. There is a limit to the number of streams that can be delivered at any one time. Eircom offers a catch-up service, which features matches in-full and highlights.
